We have created a sample lesson using Google Docs, that would be a appropriate for a grade 5 teacher, using a section of the level 3.5 progression point "design questionnaires to obtain data from a sample of the population" (Victorian Essential Learning Standards).
Firstly, the students could be put into groups, before setting up a wikispace in order to work collaboratively to create the questionnarie; deciding what sort of information they would like to gather from the survey and what questions they intend to ask. By using wikispaces, each member of the group can log on and make a contribution at their leisure, making it an ideal homework activity. Using wikispaces would also provide an interesting way for the teacher to assess the level of involvement of each student. Once the students have all agreed on the topic and questions they would like to ask, they can set about designing thier questionnaire using Google Docs.

Here is an example. using the form program on Google Docs.

Once the surveys have been completed by the chosen population, the students can quickly and easily transform the data found on the survey into graphical evidence by creating a spreadsheet, again using google docs. This program is also very simple to use and teaching time can be spent on how to create effective questionnaires, how to analyse data and how to effectively represent data which is all part of the VELS program.

There are many benefits of using this program in the classroom, in regards to creating surveys but also the many other available applications found on Google Docs.
